A Vision Turned Reality: The Officer Behind the Innovation
IFS officer Vaibhav Singh developed the Forest Fire Uttarakhand app after learning global fire management techniques in Canada in 2017. In 2019, he tested the concept through a pilot app in Rudraprayag, achieving immediate success in reducing fire cases. Inspired by international practices, he worked with his team to scale this innovation across the entire state, bringing advanced technology and field experience together.
Official Launch & Statewide Implementation
On March 29, 2025, the Uttarakhand Forest Department, led by Dr. Dhananjay Mohan, launched the Forest Fire Uttarakhand app. Along with this, they opened an Integrated Command and Control Center. The app operates nationally by enabling instant alerts, fire reporting, and real-time monitoring. Android users, forest officers, and volunteers directly benefit, increasing efficiency and public involvement.
How It Works: From 7-Hour Delays to Instant Alerts
Previously, fire alerts could take up to seven hours to arrive via SMS chains. The new app connects directly to the FSI detection system, giving instant notifications to more than 5,000 officials and 2,000 volunteers. Upon detection, the app finds the nearest fire crew station among 900, dispatches a team, and tracks live incident updates. Response status, photos, and resolution steps become visible to all stakeholders, speeding up firefighting and boosting transparency.
Smart Features for Smarter Firefighting
The app stands apart with:
- GPS tracking on 21 firefighting vehicles, updating the command center.
- Predictive alerts for fire-prone zones, using FSI’s real-time data.
- Public participation features that let anyone report fires by uploading geo-tagged photos with precise locations.
This enhanced interactivity transforms citizens into active conservation participants, beyond the limits of traditional informational systems.
Current Fire Scenario in Uttarakhand
During this season, Uttarakhand recorded 15 fire cases, ranking 15th in the FSI’s Near Real-Time Fire Alerts from November 1, 2024, to March 26, 2025. Mr. Singh and the department see future potential to further decrease fire incidents, as the app continues improving prevention and response.
