Govt push for skill training, social empowerment

A vibrant exhibition celebrating the creativity of children from state-run childcare institutions and women from government shelters opened today at the Secretariat complex in Dehradun. Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan inaugurated the exhibition, highlighting it as a key initiative to empower marginalized groups through skill-building and creative expression.

Empowerment Through Art and Skill Training

Bardhan applauded the artistic works, including paintings and handcrafted items made by the participants. He directed officials to implement effective measures for making the children in care homes self-reliant by integrating them into mainstream society. The Chief Secretary also emphasized vocational training for women residing in the state’s shelter homes to enhance their skills and product quality, according to media reports.

Diverse Range of Creative Products

The exhibition features a wide variety of handmade products such as decorative candles, karwa items, lamps, and traditional Uttarakhand art forms including Bheemtal and Aipan paintings. Several of these items are available for both display and sale, offering participants a chance to showcase their talent while supporting social livelihoods. As per several media sources, the initiative serves as a platform to connect creative self-help with public participation.

Initiative by Women Empowerment Department

Organized by the Department of Women Empowerment and Child Development through its outreach outlet Aalamban Centre, the exhibition will continue until October 17. The event demonstrates the department’s sustained effort to promote skill training, education, and psychological support for children and women in state institutions. Officials present included Secretary Chandresh Yadav, Director B.L. Rana, Chief Probation Officer Anjana Gupta, State Nodal Officer Arti Balodi, District Probation Officer Meena Bisht, and Program Manager Preeti Upadhyay.

The exhibition not only showcases the creative potential of women and children in care but also highlights the government’s inclusive approach toward rehabilitation, education, and sustainable empowerment.

The initiative is expected to inspire broader participation from NGOs and youth groups in supporting vocational empowerment and social reintegration programs across Uttarakhand.
