Smart learning gets boost with new Uttarakhand e-initiative

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched a major digital education initiative on Saturday, marking a significant leap toward modern learning in government schools. The event, held at Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalaya in Nanurkheda, Dehradun, introduced centralized studios for hybrid-mode virtual and smart classrooms under the ICT scheme of Samagra Shiksha Uttarakhand. The launch connected 840 state-run schools across the state, with the Chief Minister interacting virtually with students during the session.

Digital Classrooms and Learning App

The Chief Minister announced that 226 schools in the state have been designated as PM SHRI Schools, and virtual classes are already active in 500 institutions. According to media reports, students can now access quality education anytime through the new Uttarakhand Virtual Learning Application. The app allows self-assessment and provides lessons from some of the country’s best educators. To expand access to remote areas, the government is also running five PM eVidya channels, enabling continuous learning for students even without classroom access.

Scholarships and Educational Opportunities

Dhami emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting meritorious students from classes 6 to 12 through the Mukhyamantri Medhavi Chhatra Protsahan Yojana. Under this scheme, top-performing students from every development block in classes 10 and 12 are being sent on educational tours across India. The state has also introduced vocational education in eight trades in secondary schools, benefitting over 42,000 students. As per several media sources, for the first time, employment fairs were held for Class 12 vocational students, leading to 146 job placements in reputed companies — an effort acknowledged by the Union Education Ministry.

Preserving Local Culture and Language

Highlighting Uttarakhand’s pioneering steps in educational reform, Dhami stated that it is the first state in the country to develop its own State Curriculum Framework for foundational learning. Schools have introduced “Bagless Days” to promote creative learning. To preserve cultural heritage, textbooks have been prepared in Garhwali, Kumaoni, and Jaunsari languages, while dictionaries are being developed in Tharu, Boksa, and Rawaalti dialects.

Policy Alignment with NEP 2020

Reaffirming the state’s alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Dhami lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming the education system into one that is tech-enabled, inclusive, and rooted in Indian values. The event was attended by Education Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, MLA Umesh Sharma ‘Kau’, Additional Secretary Ranjana Rajguru, DG Education Deepti Singh, and senior officials, along with students participating from across the state through virtual platforms.

Uttarakhand’s education reforms reflect a digital-first vision aimed at modernizing learning infrastructure, expanding access, and equipping students with essential 21st-century skills.

This initiative sets the stage for broader digital transformation across public education, bridging the gap for students in remote areas and nurturing a tech-driven learning culture statewide.
