Uttarakhand is witnessing a new era in religious and ecological development as Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the first phase of the ambitious Sharda Corridor project at Sharda Ghat, Tanakpur. The project, with an estimated outlay of ₹185.20 crore, promises to blend spirituality, heritage, tourism, and sustainability in the river valley from Banbasa to Mata Rankochi.
Spiritual Heritage Meets Green Development
During the inauguration, CM Dhami expressed that the Sharda Corridor will serve as a hub of faith, local culture, and continuous development. According to media reports, the project aims to transform the Sharda river valley into a vibrant confluence of religious devotion, nature, and employment opportunities. “This land will now offer economic prosperity and new opportunities for locals, in addition to being a center of faith,” Dhami emphasized.
Modern Amenities and Sustainable Infrastructure
The corridor will see a major redevelopment of Sharda Ghat, featuring facilities like secure bathing areas, world-class aarti sites, advanced sanitation and rest zones, scenic riverfronts, easy access routes, pedestrian pathways, lighting systems, and beautification works. As per several media sources, the aarti site will be constructed using international techniques and will include modern features such as rainwater harvesting and a floor cooling system. Flood-resistant structures are planned to protect surrounding areas, ensuring long-term safety and sustainability.
Boost for Religious Tourism and Local Economy
Dhami stated that the Sharda Corridor will accelerate religious tourism, revitalize the local economy, and generate jobs. The corridor serves as a unique model for social, cultural, and environmental progress in Uttarakhand. Local officials, including Shyam Narayan Pandey, Shankar Koranga, Anand Singh Adhikari, Anshula Bohra, Govind Samant, Manish Kumar, and Dr. G.S. Khati, joined the launch event, with a large number of citizens in attendance.
The Sharda Corridor project is set to reshape faith-based tourism and economic prospects for the Kumaon region, offering a blueprint for sustainable riverfront development across India.
The coming months may see enhanced infrastructure, growing tourist inflow, and new livelihood options for Himalayan communities as the corridor work progresses.
