From village roots to IPS: Journey of grit and service

A boy from Pakar village in Chhattisgarh dreamed beyond limits. Years later, Dr. Jitendra Yadav rose from modest beginnings to the Indian Police Service, leading anti-Naxal ops and cracking major cases. His extraordinary UPSC journey now inspires countless civil service aspirants

From VillageSchool to Academic Milestones

Dr. Jitendra Kumar Yadav, born on January 25, 1989, in Pakar village, Jashpur district, Chhattisgarh, is the youngest of three brothers. He completed his primary education at Saraswati Shishu Mandir and later studied at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Bhupdevpur, Raigarh. Scoring 85% in Class 10 and 90.6% in Class 12, he pursued veterinary science at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai. Graduating as a gold medalist in 2012, he secured 84.94%, establishing an academic foundation for future challenges.

Balancing Job and Civil Services Preparation

After graduation, Yadav moved to Delhi to prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. To avoid burdening his family, he worked in the Veterinary Department, self-financing his stay and study. During this period, he cleared the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission with rank 114.

UPSC Attempts and Breakthrough Success

In 2014, Yadav cleared the UPSC exam on his first attempt, achieving an All India Rank of 379. He was allotted the Indian Revenue Service and joined as Assistant Commissioner of GST in Rohtak, Haryana. Even after securing a government post, he kept pursuing his goal of becoming an IPS officer. Though he failed to clear prelims in 2015 and 2016, he finally succeeded in 2017 with rank 170, earning selection into the Indian Police Service. In 2018, he again cleared the exam with rank 350, though he remained in IPS.

Entry into the Indian Police Service

On August 27, 2018, Yadav joined IPS training at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad. His field posting began in Baloda Bazar–Bhatapara, where he solved excise-related cases, IPL betting rackets, and two blind murder cases as Officer-in-Charge at Bhatapara Police Station.

Service and Key Postings

Yadav later became City Superintendent of Police in Durg, where he investigated the Mahadev App betting scam and the Shivansh Chandrakar murder case. His subsequent posting in Bhanupratappur, Kanker, as Additional SP (Naxal Operations), saw him lead recruitment for Bastar Fighters, open a police camp in Ambeda, and conduct counter-Naxal missions.

He later served as Superintendent of Police in Balod, where he restored law and order in Pateshwar Dham and solved a theft case worth ₹1 crore. His tenure in Bijapur, a Naxal-affected district, marked a landmark phase. Police forces under his leadership opened three new camps in remote areas, neutralized 51 Naxalites, arrested over 280, and ensured the surrender of 122.

Personal Life and Background

Yadav’s father, Ghanshyam Yadav, worked in the Irrigation Department until his passing before his son’s IPS success. His elder brother is a government teacher, while the second serves as a Sub-Inspector. Yadav is married to Vedshree, a food scientist.

Wrap-up

From a village in Chhattisgarh to frontline policing, Yadav’s path charts a determined journey. His career highlights academic distinction, multiple UPSC successes, and operational leadership against crime and Naxalism. His story continues to inspire youth aiming for the civil services.

Such achievements highlight rising opportunities for students from rural areas who combine discipline with determination. Stories like Yadav’s may drive greater interest in competitive exams, encourage reforms in rural education, and inspire young aspirants to pursue careers in national service.
