Centre Agrees in Principle to State’s Development Plans

Uttarakhand is pushing forward a dual development agenda—balancing renewable energy expansion with sports infrastructure aimed at youth empowerment. In a recent meeting in New Delhi, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held talks with Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, seeking clearances and support for key projects that could reshape the state’s environmental and social landscape.

Push for Hydropower Development

The Chief Minister urged the Centre to approve seven hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 647 MW across Uttarakhand. These facilities are planned along the Ganga and its tributaries, with a focus on ensuring river purity, uninterrupted flow, and surrounding environmental safety. According to media reports, the state government has pledged strict adherence to eco-friendly construction protocols and sustained monitoring once operations begin.

Commitment to Environmental Protection

Officials emphasized that the hydropower expansion is aligned with Uttarakhand’s climate goals. As per several media sources, the government plans detailed impact assessments and river conservation strategies before project execution. CM Dhami reiterated that renewable energy will play a pivotal role in clean power generation without compromising the state’s ecological heritage.

Sports University Plan in Haldwani

In addition to energy development, CM Dhami announced a decision to set up a sports university in Haldwani to create employment-oriented opportunities for youth. The proposed site spans about 12.317 hectares in the Gaulapar area. A formal proposal to transfer this forest land has been sent to the Forest Department, and the CM requested the Union Minister to direct officials to expedite necessary approvals.

Centre’s Response and Key Officials Present

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav gave in-principle approval and assured full cooperation. The meeting was attended by Tanmay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Dr. R. Meenakshi Sundaram, Uttarakhand’s Principal Secretary; Dr. Parag Madhukar Dhakate, Special Secretary; and Ajay Mishra, Local Commissioner for Uttarakhand in New Delhi.

The coordinated announcements highlight a strategic blend of green energy investment and sports-led youth development, signaling the state’s intent to align with national sustainability and skill-generation goals.

Uttarakhand’s parallel push in hydropower expansion and sports infrastructure is expected to enhance renewable energy capacity while encouraging youth engagement in sports and skill-based careers.
