- Dehradun, Haridwar station upgrades
- Tanakpur-Bageshwar rail expansion
- New train frequency for Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi to discuss the expansion of rail infrastructure across the state. The meeting focused on upgrading major stations, doubling key routes, and linking new regions through strategic railway projects that could boost regional connectivity and tourism.
Dehradun and Haridwar Stations to be Upgraded
During the discussion, Dhami proposed that Dehradun and Haridwar railway stations be developed as “Adarsh Railway Stations,” equipped with modern passenger facilities and sustainable infrastructure. He requested the Union Ministry to bear the full cost of expanding and strengthening both stations, along with the Haridwar-Dehradun rail line doubling project. According to media reports, Vaishnaw agreed in principle to the proposal and assured a detailed assessment before a final decision.
Connectivity Upgrade Through New Alignments
To enhance connectivity in the hilly terrains, the Chief Minister urged the inclusion of Almora and Someshwar regions in the alignment of the proposed Tanakpur-Bageshwar rail project. Dhami also suggested that tunnel routes should include parallel roads for easier accessibility and transport integration. As per several media sources, the Railway Minister agreed to examine these possibilities.
Transition of Old Rishikesh Station Land
Dhami further requested the complete transfer of land from the old Rishikesh railway station to the Uttarakhand government, as the station is no longer operational. He assured support in providing additional land near Yog Nagri station if needed for smoother operations and expansion. Vaishnaw granted in-principle approval to the proposal and conveyed cooperation between both governments on this matter.
More Trains to Boost Regional Mobility
Responding to Uttarakhand’s demand for better intercity rail services, the Union Minister approved increasing the frequency of the Dehradun–Tanakpur weekly train to thrice a week. This move is expected to benefit commuters, local traders, and tourists traveling across the Kumaon and Garhwal regions.
The meeting marked a major step toward enhancing Uttarakhand’s railway infrastructure, paving the way for improved connectivity between pilgrimage centers, tourism hubs, and remote districts.
The decisions are likely to accelerate economic activity, improve travel accessibility, and support Uttarakhand’s long-term vision of becoming a better-connected, tourism-driven state.
