Uttarakhand launches new ex-servicemen welfare plans

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has launched a major initiative to strengthen support for ex-servicemen and their families, marking the state’s 25th anniversary celebrations with a grand event in Haldwani. The move highlights the government’s commitment to improving welfare infrastructure and honoring the sacrifices of soldiers and their families.

Ex-Servicemen Welfare Boosted

Chief Minister Dhami inaugurated the ‘Ex-Servicemen Sammelan’ at MBPG College, Haldwani, announcing a comprehensive restructuring of the state’s ex-servicemen welfare department. According to media reports, the department will be made more efficient and transparent, ensuring that every soldier’s family receives benefits smoothly.

  • The government will reconstruct district-level ex-servicemen welfare offices and residential buildings in Haldwani, Almora, and Pauri.
  • Widows of martyred soldiers will now receive ₹5 lakh for housing assistance, up from ₹2 lakh.
  • A modern hostel for 150 children of soldiers will be built in Haldwani, providing quality education and safe accommodation.

Honoring Sacrifice and Service

Dhami praised the contributions of ex-servicemen and their families, calling Uttarakhand a true “land of valor.” He emphasized that every family in the state has someone dedicated to national service, reinforcing the region’s proud military legacy.

  • The Chief Minister showered flowers on attendees and honored 31 “veer naries” (brave women) from Nainital and 13 from Udham Singh Nagar with shawls and memorabilia.
  • He highlighted the importance of discipline, dedication, and sacrifice in a soldier’s life, stating that a soldier is always a soldier, never just an ex-serviceman.

Infrastructure and Future Plans

The government has earmarked 6.4 hectares of land near the Haldwani sugar center for the new hostel, with the Chief Minister set to lay the foundation stone soon. The project is expected to provide long-term benefits for military families.

  • The state is also focusing on self-reliance in defense, citing the success of indigenous missiles like BrahMos and Akash in recent operations.
  • Officials stressed that there is no place for anti-national sentiments in India, and the country is rapidly becoming self-sufficient in military technology.

Community and Leadership Participation

The event drew large crowds of ex-servicemen, widows, and family members from across Uttarakhand. Senior leaders, including Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal, Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt, and several MLAs and district officials, attended the gathering.

  • The presence of top political and administrative figures underscored the state’s unified commitment to soldier welfare.
  • The event also featured speeches and tributes from various dignitaries, highlighting the collective respect for military service.

Uttarakhand’s latest welfare initiatives for ex-servicemen and their families mark a significant step toward recognizing and supporting those who have served the nation. The government’s focus on infrastructure, financial aid, and community engagement sets a strong foundation for future support programs.

With these new measures, society can expect improved welfare services, greater recognition for military families, and a stronger sense of pride and unity among Uttarakhand’s citizens. The state’s commitment to honoring its soldiers is likely to inspire similar initiatives across India.
